Learning for Inclusive Leadership : Educational Needs for Leaders of Children and Youth with Disabilities within the Wrestling Federation (English)
Abstract [en]

According to its own mission statement, sports should be open and accessible to everyone. Despite this, children and young people with disabilities face significant challenges when participating in sports activities. One of the biggest challenges is that coaches often lack sufficient training to meet the needs of children and young people with disabilities. This lack of training and understanding leads to significantly lower participation rates in sports among children and young people with disabilities compared to their non-disabled peers. The purpose of this study is to examine the opportunities and challenges faced by wrestling coaches in including children and young people with disabilities. Additionally, the study aims to identify the necessary training content and practical methods for educating coaches to effectively include children and young people with disabilities. To achieve this goal, a qualitative study was conducted, involving interviews with wrestling coaches and experts in inclusive sports. The findings reveal a substantial need for specialized training for coaches, as well as concrete tools and resources to adapt training sessions to the individual needs of children and young people with disabilities. In conclusion, improved training for coaches is essential for creating a more inclusive sports environment. By tailoring the training content and methods, sports organizations can better support all children and young people, regardless of their abilities, fostering a sense of belonging and community within sports.
