Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability : A Study of AI Use for Ecological Sustainability Issues in the Aviation Industry (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to explore the challenges and associated with the use of Artificial

Intelligence (AI) for environmental sustainability within the aviation industry. This study

adopts a case study approach and uses semi-structured interviews as well as thematic

analysis to achieve this. The findings of the study indicate that while AI has a part in

environmental sustainability, its impact is not predominant. Other factors such as

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and new airplane technology plays a far more significant

role. Other challenges include the difference in research expectations of AI versus the

actual potential as well as an overwhelming focus on economic sustainability rather than

ecological regarding the use of AI. Regarding the possibilities, the study found that

airlines, today, use AI for optimization, which indirectly results in environmental

sustainability. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge regarding AI

usage for environmental sustainability, specifically in the aviation industry.
