With the people for the morality : – A qualitative study of Christian Democratic populism (English)
Abstract [en]
For the last couple of years, the Swedish Christian Democrats have been accused of adopting a new populist rhetoric under their current leadership. This is said to be in odds with their heritage as a party that promotes universal Christian values. However, this description is a somewhat strange when you take into consideration that the party can trace its roots back to the Swedish Pentecostal movement. Experiences from other countries tell us that non-conformist denominations, like the evangelicals in USA, often make up most of the support for populist politicians. Therefore, it doesn’t seem implausible that the only Swedish party with its roots in a non-conformist movement at least have had some populist elements in its rhetoric right from its beginning. The aim of this paper is therefore to investigate the rhetoric used by the party during its first year and today. This with the purpose of determining if the party´s rhetoric is characterized more by populism today than it was before.
