This study examines the relationship between the occupational preferences of children and the occupation of parents to identify the existence of occupational mobility. The investigation focuses on Umeå University students with a sample size of 453 observations. The study aims to identify the parental influence on the gender-wise occupational preferences of their children, and region-wise parental influence over the world on the occupational preference of the individuals. To achieve these objectives, both a basic linear regression approach as well as a multinominal logit model are used. The findings reveal that there is a positive association between the occupational preferences of the children with both mother’s and father’s occupations which implies the same occupational category higher preference of children for the occupations of their parents which indicates that children have a higher preference for an occupational category held by at least one of their parents compared to other categories. Furthermore, the results suggest that the parental influence on the occupational preference of their children differs between regions of origin.
