EN SKOLA FÖR ALLA!: Den segregerade svenska skolan
Umeå University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of applied educational science.
2024 (Swedish)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

A study from the Stockholm area (Bunar, 2015) shows that students from lower socio-economic backgrounds are among the groups that have the greatest difficulty succeeding at school. Furthermore, school segregation limits educational opportunities for individuals, hindering their ability to succeed in the labour market and in life (Guevara, 2014). The aim of this research is to increase knowledge about the impact and consequences of segregation in Swedish compulsory schools. This qualitative study employs phenomenographic methods, including semi-structured interviews with principals and teachers. It also presents a summary of the theory, and scientific concepts associated with the Swedish compulsory school curriculum and Bourdieu's theory of capitals. The study highlights socio-economic, structural and knowledge deficiencies in the internal work of schools, which leads to increased segregation and spread of student results.
