Abstract [en]

Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) are promising light-emitting deviceswith the possibility of paving the way for low cost and sustainable light-emissionvia solution based printing techniques. Their applications spans all the way frompatient care within MedTech, to light-emitting labels aimed for brand protection, advertisement and marketing. For such applications to be in line with a sustainablefuture, it is of greatest interest that LECs are manufactured in a material efficientmanner. This project investigated the reusability of the active layer in a LEC, com-prised of an electroluminescent semiconducting polymer mixed with an electrolyte, specifically the reuse of waste material during fabrication. After recovering the usedmaterial, we concluded that 70 % of the material was not recoverable. From thematerial that we could recover, we showed that it was undamaged and containedall the components. Then we succeeded in manufacturing LECs using the recoveredmaterial. These recovered devices were functional and performed with higher lumi-nance, but with higher voltage than pristine LECs. Hence, this project paves theway for further development in order to reach a more sustainable material handling.
