Plan B: Emergency architecture in the light of climate change

Abstract [en]

The climate emergencies, such as wildfires and flooding, will increase in number and severity. There will be evacuations and a need for evacuation centres. In Sweden, these centres are usually located in sports halls, vast spaces with no privacy or sense of home. This project therefore explores a temporary architecture for these spaces that can provide a bit of calm in the chaos yet allow for life.

By interviewing people working with emergency preparedness in Sweden, key aspects of the design were defined. The architecture needed to be easy and fast to set up and transport, moreover, it should provide for all basic human needs.

Using Ålidhemshallen in Umeå as a generic test base, various iterations were explored. The final iteration consists of a building kit of steel pipes, with a textile envelope that includes storage space. The modules provide privacy and the possibility to have your own space, yet the configuration of them also provide space for encounters.
