Abstract [en]
This thesis explores the role of credit unions in achieving financial inclusion in The Gambia especially in underserved areas. Financial inclusion is essential for promoting socioeconomic development, especially in developing economies like The Gambia, where access to financial services is limited, particularly for underserved populations. Through a qualitative research approach, including interviews with relevant stakeholders such as administrators, clients, and regulators, this study investigates factors that influence financial inclusion. Key determinants such as access to financial services, education, financial literacy, regulations, electricity and technology are examined to understand their impact on financial inclusion. The findings highlight the critical role that credit unions play in providing affordable financial services to marginalized groups. The study concludes with recommendations for policymakers and practitioners on improving financial inclusion through strategic interventions by credit unions and other MFIs.
