Nursing staff’s experiences of nutritional care of elderly : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Resultat: Fem kategorier presenteras.

Abstract [en]

Abstract

Background: Malnutrition is a widespread problem among the elderly. Where up to one in three in people hospitals and up to one in two people in special housing are estimated to be malnourished in Sweden. Good nutritional care is therefore important for treatment and prevention of malnutrition among the elderly.

Aim: To illuminate the nursing staff's experiences of factors that affect nutritional care for the elderly.

Methods: The literature study was based on nine qualitative articles. The database searches were performed in PubMed and Cinahl. The articles were analyzed based on Friberg's five-step model.

Results: Presents five categories.  These were the importance of nutrition knowledge, the importance of prioritization at the organizational and workplace level, the importance of collaboration, the importance of person-centred nutrition care and the importance of meals.

Conclusion: According to healthcare professionals, nutritional care for the elderly is affected by many different factors. Several factors show deficiencies in nutritional care and that a lower priority than other tasks. Making these factors visible can contribute to a better understanding of the area both at workplaces and at organizational level, which in turn can lead to better nutritional care for the elderly.
