Abstract [en]

Violence in intimate relationships is a major social problem that affects all different types of people. The purpose of this study is to investigate the connection at the municipal level between the number of reported violent crimes in close relationships among women and the municipalities’ socio-economic situation. The socio-economic factors studied are income level, level of education and degree of employment. The data collection consisted of crime statistics from Brottsförebyggande rådet, public statistics of the municipalities from Kolada and municipal division from Sveriges Kommuner och Regioner. Two additional descriptive analyses were done to see the central tendencies and dispersion measure of the selected variables. In the second analysis, the mean value of the variables was also compared in three different municipal groups - larger, medium and smaller. Three linear regression analyzes were performed to see how the variables individually affect the proportion of reported violent crimes in close relationships at the municipal level. Two multiple linear regression analyzes were performed to see how the variables together and municipal grouping affect the proportion of reported crimes. To see how the relationship between socio-economic status and proportion of reported crimes varies depending on the municipal group classification, an interaction effect was made between these variables. The results from the analysis showed that there is a relationship between low socio-economic status and the proportion of reported violent crimes in close relationships at the municipality level and that there was a stronger connection between socio-economic affects to the proportion of reported crimes in larger municipalities, compared to medium-sized and smaller municipalities where the results were weaker. These results provide support for the hypothesis as well as what previous research and the theories of social disorganization and intersectionality say.
