Abstract [en]
This qualitative research examines how the professional identity of the police is created, maintained and if it is affecting the personal life. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted with field police officers that are currently or previously have been working. The professional identity of the police is a relatively untouched field of research. The theoretical framework of this study is based on Goffman’s dramaturgical perspective, social learning theory and the concept of the mask of the warrior. The result suggests that the creation of the professional identity is a process that is affected by many factors, inter alia, education, relatives and experienced colleagues. The profession as a police officer demands the ability to embrace a role. The uniform owns a significant role in both the creation and maintenance of the profession identity. A considerate part of the professional identity is the group dynamics of the police colleagues and the group members' expectations of each other. In some cases the occurrences that the police are being exposed of is also impacting their personal life. The respondents vary in their level of communication with relatives about their experiences and the feeling of being understood. Some of the respondents agree with the concept of the mask of the warrior, but not fully to be applied on their professional identity as police officers. Limitations with the study and recommendations for future research are discussed.
