Food as medicine : A literature review on the impact of food on asthma (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Asthma is the most common chronic lung disease in industrialized countries. Diets containing higher amounts of fruits and vegetables, but lower amounts of meat and dairy have shown to reduce the risk of asthma.

Aim: The study aimed to investigate how diet affects asthma-related symptomsindividuals with asthma.

Methods: This paper has a quantitative approach. Nine studies from different countries have been reviewed for quality, analyzed and compiled in an article compilation. The studies investigated both children and adults. The searches were conducted on Cinahl and PubMed.

Results: Eight out of nine studies showed effects on asthma-related symptoms. The interventions yielded mixed outcomes, showing both significant and non-significant effects on asthma-related symptoms. The studies that were conducted over a longer period and studied overall dietary patterns showed significant results in asthma-related symptoms.Fruits, vegetables and healthy fats appeared to have positive effects on asthma-related symptoms, while histamine and saturated fats seemed to have negative effects.

Conclusion: A low-histamine diet appears to improve lung function. A diet high in fruits and vegetables, with reduced saturated fats or increased healthy fats, may have positive effects on inflammation and asthma symptoms. Further studies are needed to investigate these associations.
