Women’s experiences after mastectomy related to breast cancer (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, with 2.3 million global diagnoses in 2022 and 8,543 cases reported in Sweden. Despite increasing prevalence, early detection and treatment have reduced mortality rates. Risk factors include age, hormonal and genetic factors, and lifestyle. Mastectomy is a common treatment, often combined with complementary therapies. Nurses play a critical role in providing support and individualized care throughout the patient’s journey, addressing the physical and emotional challenges associated with breast cancer.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe women's experiences of mastectomy related to breast cancer.

Method: A literature review was conducted based on 10 qualitative studies. Database searches were performed in CINAHL and PubMed. Friberg’s five-step model was used to analyze the studies.

Results: The analysis identified four main categories: “The impact of mastectomy on self-perception,” “The impact of mastectomy on relationships,” “Pathways to well-being,” and “The significance of support.”

Conclusion: Experiences of mastectomy are complex, influencing women's body image, relationships, and overall well-being. Person-centered support from healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, is essential to facilitate adaptation and promote the physical and psychological health of women undergoing mastectomy
