Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study compares metafiction as defined by Linda Hutcheon in Cien años de soledad (1967) or One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez and Terra Sonâmbula (1992) or Sleepwalking Land by Mia Couto to describe how these metafictive novels comment on the reading process, as well as how the genre of magical realism shapes these metafictive elements. Through comparing the use of metafictional reading processes the study reaches the conclusion that both One Hundred Years of Solitude and Sleepwalking Land are novels that metafictively refer to themselves as an aesthetic object and describe the experience of the assumed reader that metafiction always presupposes. Metafiction also interacts with the transgression of boundaries allowed by magical realism, which for the engrossed or active reader can be described within the genre as an example of textualization as defined by Jon Thiem. Though the engrossed or active reader explains one part of the paradoxical position of the reader Hutcheon’s definition of distance explains the other, which both novels mimic through many small moments of textual self-awareness as well as one final storm that pulls both the presupposed reader of metafiction and the fictional reader out of the novel.
