Abstract [en]
This thesis examines the portrayal of trolls and fairies in folk legends from Northern Skaraborg from an ecocritical perspective and how these beings are perceived today. The study includes a comparison with the ongoing writing project De naturfödda (The Nature-Born). Since the characteristics of such beings often vary depending on their geographical origin, personal accounts from the local area are analyzed to identify unique traits. The results show that the portrayal of trolls has remained largely unchanged, though they are now depicted as larger and more brutal. Fairies, on the other hand, have evolved from being malevolent and vague in appearance to being portrayed as benevolent and maiden-like. The study highlights a strong contemporary interest in folklore, making the book series relevant to the present day. To preserve folklore and the connection of forest beings to the untouched natural world, their portrayal should return to its original forms. By focusing on the traits described in traditional folk legends, local cultural heritage can be preserved.
