Abstract [en]

Conflicts around the world have a profound impact on society, creating a fertile ground for extreme ideologies and acts of terrorism. Violent Islamist extremism is a significant transnational threat, fueled by digital influence, disinformation, and propaganda. In Sweden, violent Islamist extremism is considered a primary terrorist threat. This study investigates how community policing strategies have been applied to prevent violent Islamist extremism through a review of existing literature. Also, exploring strategies advantages and challenges. The study aims to answer two main questions: 1) What strategies have police forces implemented in community policing to combat violent Islamist extremism? 2) What are the benefits and drawbacks of these strategies? Key issues include the need for cultural and religious understanding, the importance of community trust, and the role of local actors in fostering effective communication between the police and at-risk communities. The study draws on international examples, such as practices in Australia, to highlight how community policing can strengthen cooperation, improve intelligence gathering, and build trust. It ultimately aims to identify the most effective community policing strategies for preventing radicalization and enhancing public safety in diverse societies.
