Students´ perceptions of their own consumption habits and of teaching sustainable development (English)
Abstract [en]
Background The school provides youths with knowledge about sustainable development, butprivate interests and finances limit their consumption towards a sustainable environment. Purpose The purpose of the study was to investigate what perceptions students in grade ninehave about education in sustainable development as well as what perceptions they have abouttheir own consumption habits. Method A quantitative online survey was conducted. The empirical material was transferredto Excel and analyzed with descriptive statistics in the form of tables, figures and text. Results The school's teaching did not influence the students' consumption choices. Althoughthere is a will among the students to contribute to a sustainable environment. At the sametime, students want more education in sustainable development but not from the subject homeeconomics. The majority state that they do not avoid companies with a bad reputation from anenvironmental perspective. In addition, the students are no strangers to buying and sellingused goods online or in stores. Conclusion Students are demanding more education in sustainable development for all, whilethey themselves state that the school has provided enough education in sustainabledevelopment to students. The majority state that they can do more for the environment.Research shows that real examples through knowledge in action are needed to teach themhow to live sustainably.
