Abstract [en]

This report describes the survey and risk classification of five closed landfills in KirunaMunicipality to increase knowledge about these sites. More information about contaminatedsites is needed because ground surface deformations from mining industry practices areencroaching on the city, requiring new Municipal plans. The survey is done according tophase one in the MIFO- model provided by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency(Method of Surveying Contaminated Sites). Using a MIFO-model survey, the polluted sitesare visited, a background check is done, samples are taken, and based on available facts, a riskassessment is made. The sites are assigned to a risk class ranging from 1 to 4, where risk class1 is the highest risk. Assessment is made depending on the level of pollution, the degree ofhazard from the present pollutants, the conditions and likeliness of dispersion, and theprotection-value of the area based on land use. In this report, the two largest landfills wereprioritized, and selected for water sampling at a total of five sampling points. Water-qualitywas characterized at the largest landfill, including one point being analyzed for metals andPCB. The samples from the other site were analyzed for metals and PCB. The results showedelevated levels of nitrogen, zinc, and slightly elevated levels of lead, nickel and copper.These elevated levels could indicate leachate generation. This survey assigned one landfill toclass 2- high risk, which requires further analysis and therefore, a MIFO Step Two should beperformed to determine a proper course of action.
