This report investigated whether private shareholders take environmental aspects into consideration when trading stocks. More specifically, do they take the effect on the environment of a certain business into consideration when choosing to invest in that business? Do they consider a company’s environmental performance when investing? Furthermore, the purpose was to provide a suggestion on how environmental management could be presented so as to have an influence on the private shareholders. A survey was conducted where 280 registered private shareholders were selected, of which 185 participated. The main conclusion is that a majority of the private shareholders take the environment effectal of a certain business and company’s environmental management into consideration when investing in stocks. This consideration is greater regarding the effects on the environment of a certain business rather than the company’s environmental performance. Although such environmental consideration is generally small, neither is it unusual to have a bigger value. The most common reason is that the shareholders wish to invest in a business with less effect on the environment and a company with good environmental performance. Another common reason is that the shareholders believe that certain businesses or companies have better conditions for profit. There are also age and gender differences in the responses, with women and older shareholders placing more value on environmental aspects. If the environmental performance should have or does have a greater influence on shareholders, my proposal is a grading of the company’s environmental performance.
