Abstract [en]

Several studies have been made in Sweden about how animal welfare control works and how it can be improved. These studies often describe only what the government thinks on the issue. Because farmers also have a big role in animal welfare controls and they have views about this matter, this study examines what farmers in Sweden think about the local governments animal welfare controls and whether there is something that can be improved. Key questions were: What views do farmers have on the animal welfare law? What kind of views do farmers have on animal inspectors? What do farmers think can be improved in the animal welfare control work? What kinds of similarities and differences are there in what the animal welfare governments think should be improved and what the farmers think about the issue? This study is based mainly on a questionnaire answered by 150 farmers that hold cows, sheep, pigs or hens/chickens. Interviews with the Federation of Swedish Farmers were also made. Almost half of the farmers who answered the questionnaire say that the Swedish animal welfare law is good as it is and almost every one of the farmers think that animal inspectors do important work. What the farmers consider of most value is that animal inspectors have good knowledge about how to work with animals. At the same time nearly half of the farmers thought that animal inspectors don’t have sufficient enough knowledge in how to work with animals. The farmers think that to improve the animal welfare controls in Sweden we should develop a self-controlling system and that more information must be given to the farmers about the animal welfare laws and the animal welfare control work in a more accessible way.
