Milk production – a continuing quality work on the farm
This study investigates the consumer view of milk quality and production on farms. We also wanted to know which obstacles need to be solved and the requisites for a functional environmental control (miljöhusesyn), and if this environmental control contributes to quality assurance of production. The competitive situation for farmers and animal protection legislation are also investigated. The study is based on a consumer investigation in questionnaire form and telephone interviews with farmers in Västerbotten. The majority of the consumers prefer Swedish milk and milk produced by Norrmejerier (the regional producer). The way production is conducted and welfare of the animals are also considered important. Milk produced in other European countries is looked upon with certain suspicion as compared to milk from Sweden. One drawback with the environmental control is the lack of personal guidance in difficult situations. The paper version of the environmental control can be adjusted to the situation on the farm. The environmental control contributes to the quality assurance of the milk production by self-control. To be able to compete on the market the farmers must decrease their production costs, maintain high quality and keep the animals in good shape. They are also forced to market themselves and inform consumers of the production demands. Farmers think that the current animal protection legislation is good. The major conclusions of the study are that the consumers have great belief in Swedish milk. According to the farmers, containing relevant material only and personal guidance can improve the environmental control whenever questions arise. The environmental control contributes to quality assurance and competition can be meet by marketing and high milk quality.
