Abstract [en]

Ecological villages, a step towards a sustainable society?

-         A study of five ecological villages

The use of nature recourses is high in the society today. We must reduce this use in order to guaranty the next generation possibilities to provide their needs. An ecological village wants to take care of sewage and waste products with a circulation of nutrients. They also want to heat their houses with environmental friendly sources. The purpose of the study was to investigate if ecological villages are a step towards a sustainable society there the use of nature resources decreases. Five ecological villages where chosen. Their water supplement, heating of houses, sewage and waste handling and factors that have an influence on them was investigated at an educational visit. Through a questionnaire, pros and cons with living in a village were also investigated. It was difficult to find an outlet for rest products from sewage, for example, urine and sludge. The sewage water also contained a lot of phosphorus, which could fertilize the lakes. The amount of waste in the villages was low compared to the rest of the society. Due to bad combustion of wood the emissions in some villages were high. The culvert system leaks a lot of heat as well as some houses in the villages. To some extent information, social structure and the number of villagers have influenced the different systems. The social security was the foremost advantage with living in a village. The disadvantage was that fact that it takes a long time to make decisions. To some extent ecological villages are a step towards a sustainable society, but there are lots of things to develop and improve. Two areas to improve are sewage handling and heating of houses.
