Abstract [en]

Education policy in Sweden has facilitated the possibilities for local actors to develop upper secondary school profiles regarding organisation and content. One of Sweden’s most common school profiles is sport. Today pupil’s can choose between three different types of sport profiled education (national, regional and local). In this study we are inspired by Bourdieus theories of social reproduction in relation to human resources and symbolic structures. The aim of this article is to analyse the influence of gender and cultural capital in relation to pupils´ choices of sport profiled education. A survey of 277 first year pupils was accomplished in three cities. The results show that both girls and boys with a strong “sport-capital” choose to national elite directed programs and that social differentiation between regional and local programs is based on pupil’s grades.
