Sawmill effects on environment and human health

This project investigated sawmill and timber industry effects on environment and human health, and protection measures that can be taken to minimize them. This report is limited to 14 sawmills in Västerbotten county, chosen because of their large production including both sawing and processing. The report was based on a questionnaire, telephone interviews, as well as visits at two sawmills. The results showed that sawmills are complex industries with a vast difference in extent regarding environmental impacts, which depend on factors such as productional alignment and geographical location. However, since each sawmill has a similar structure the entire industry causes the same types of effects on environment and health. Noise, which originates from most processing steps, together with logging truck transport gave rise to the most complaints from local residents. In addition to transport exhaust fumes the sawmill industry affected the air through flue gas discharges produced from solid fuel combustion. The environment is also affected when nearby recipients are exposed to waste water discharges from refuse dumps and irrigated timber warehouses. The key conclusion is that the two issues that should be concentrated on are 1) how to make transport from forests to sawmills more efficient, and most importantly 2) how to reduce noise impact on nearby buildings as efficiently as possible. The latter issue has, apart from increased sawmill activity, come up through buildings being built even closer to the sawmills. The sawmills are not solely responsible for solving this problem: the authorities must also limit building in the sawmills’ immediate vicinity.
