Abstract [en]

Future establishment and restoration of wetlands in Sweden

The Swedish Parliament has established 16 environmental quality goals to improve theenvironment, some of these goals contain actions like establishment and restoration ofwetlands. The aim of this thesis is to assess which goals and strategies affect establishmentand restoration of wetlands, and how these goals can be achieved. Main questions include: Isthe current practical knowledge and available equipment sufficient? How is this workfinanced? How sensitive is this work to economic fluctuations? The report is based on asurvey of Sweden’s county administrative boards and analyses of information that is availablefrom Swedish authorities. The survey was sent to all 21 of Sweden’s county administrativeboards and 20 of them answered. The result of the survey showed that the work withestablishment and restoration is prioritised. It also showed that the current practicalknowledge and available equipment is sufficient, but it is harder to predict if the work withestablishment and restoration of wetlands will be intensified. The biggest problem is the lackof resources, both in form of available funding and administrative personal. The conclusion ofthe report is that existing goals and regulations are sufficient, but even though some fundingsare available for establishment and restoration of wetlands, it is not enough.
