Energy and water saving for Herrtvätten AB, Söderhamn

Energy saving can contribute both to reduced use of fossil fuels and personal profits in the form of financial savings and competitiveness in the market. This report includes a review of the water and energy usage at Herrtvätten AB, a laundry company for private and business customers, and possible measures that can lead to reduction in usage. All facts were collected through visits and meeting with the personnel, literature studies and contact with experts. Calculations for investment alternatives have been made in a lifecycle-template. At Herrtvätten, steam is produced in an electric kettle that is used for all the washing and drying equipment. The heat loss from the pipes is meant to work as a heating system for the building, but does often lead to external venting of excess heat. The total requirement of energy is calculated as 125 000 kWh per year. In order to reduce the heat loss it is necessary to insulate the pipes more and to install a separate heating system for the building. District heating is an environmentally friendly option and is profitable in the long run to heat both the building and washing machines. With an air heat pump the electricity needed for heat could be reduced by 30%. An exchange of machinery would also decrease the need for water and energy.
