”Inventories and risk classifications of the two landfills Vaksala-Eke 3:8 and Tuna backar36:1, Uppsala, according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s ”Method ofSurveying Contaminated Sites” phase one

This master thesis encompasses an inventory of two disused landfills, Vaksala-Eke and Tuna backarin Uppsala, Sweden. Investigations of the contamination situation for each object were done and arisk classification according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency´s ”Method ofSurveying Contaminated Sites” phase one followed. A programme for sampling was also developedfor Vaksala-Eke, in case of further investigations. The landfill of Vaksala-Eke is situated in thedistrict of Vaksala, in the eastern part of Uppsala. Waste products from industries, households anddemolition works were most likely deposited. Contaminations that might occur are primarily heavymetals, chlorinated and non-chlorinated solvents, phenols, oils, dioxins and other carcinogenicsubstances. The landfill is surrounded by clay soil, situated in an area used for agriculture and istoday filled with water. The object was classified in risk class 2, which means that furtherinvestigations at the site are necessary. The landfill of Tuna backar is located in the residential areaof Tuna backar, in the northern part of Uppsala. Waste products from households and demolitionworks were probably deposited. As a construction work was about to begin in the area,contaminations were found and the object was partly decontaminated. The results of the analysesmainly revealed high contents of carcinogenic substances, zinc, copper, cadmium and lead.Residential buildings are today situated upon the landfill and it is almost impossible to conductfurther investigations of the object at the moment. The object is situated in the outer restricted areaof a water purification plant, borders onto sensitive ecosystems with high protection values and hasthereby been classified in risk class
