Hygiene and Transmission of Contagious Diseases in Gymnasiums

This study investigates the hygienic routines applied in gymnasiums throughout the city of Umeå, Sweden and the adequacy of those routines . Furthermore, the aim is to distinguish whether the gymnasiums that have been inspected by the local authority have more suitable hygienic routines than those who have not been inspected.  Based on the test results suggestions are made for action proposals according to how to maintain a high hygienic standard in the gymnasiums. Interviews with the staff in charge of cleaning were undertaken at seven gymnasiums, of which three have been recently been inspected by the local authority. Three agar imprints were taken at similar spots in each gymnasium and were subsequently examined in order to detect the number of colony-forming bacteria. According to the results there are large variations in what hygienic routines are in place at each visited gymnasium. The gymnasium with the lowest total amount of bacteria on the agar imprints had 57 bacteria colonies, while the gym with the highest had1054 bacteria colonies on the agar. Based on the results it could not be proven that the gymnasiums that had been inspected by the local authority had more adequate hygienic routines, nor was it possible to find any connection between hygienic routines and the amount of bacteria colonies on the agar imprints. Due to these outcomes it was not possible to make any action proposals, other than that each gymnasium should evaluate the suitability and effectiveness of their respective routines.
