Characterization of hazardous wastewater and proposal for final threshold values of discharged process wastewater
This report is done on commission for Ragn-Sells AB in Luleå with the aim to examine whether the method for treatment of hazardous wastewater, divided into alkaline degreasing fluids, oil emulsions, oil-damaged water and sludge, could be improved. A further aim is to propose final threshold values for the discharge of process wastewater. Through studies of customer information fromRagn-Sells’ records, 10 of their largest customers were identified. Based on interviews with the customers and studies of similar companies and processes a general characterization of the content of different divisions of the hazardous wastewater was done. Because there are no analyses of the content of the divisions of hazardous wastewater, proposed methods of treatment of the wastewater are based on literature studies and therefore the treatment proposed for the wastewater in this report has to be evaluated prior to use. The proposed method for treatment of alkaline degreasing fluids is chemical sedimentation and flocking combined with a final treatment step – such as active carbon. The proposed method for treatment of oil emulsions and oil-damaged water is ultrafiltration combined with reverse osmosis. It is suggested that sludge be tested by evaporative concentration. By reviewing quaterly- and monthly analysis of the discharged process wastewater a proposal for threshold values could be made. The proposal is that the present threshold values will be changed from monthly- based values to quarterly-based, which will reduce the discharge of chemical substances by two-thirds for one year. At the same time it should not be hard for Ragn-Sells to keep the threshold values because the review has revealed that it may be possible.
