Abstract [en]

Areas for storing unusable and demolished cars in Sundsvall municipality

The environmental department of Sundsvall municipality has earlier been contacted to investigate the existence of areas where unusable and demolished cars are stored. Certain garages and towing companies were suspected of using such areas. Contact was made with the companies under suspicion via a questionnaire or a phone interview.  The results indicate that towing companies do not have any areas for storing unusable and demolished cars; instead, these cars are immediately transported to either garages or demolition companies. The interviewed garages did indicate on the other hand that they store cars before they repair them or sending them away for demolition. Based on the initial results from phone interviews, four companies (i.e. Verkstad 1, 2, 3 and 4) were selected for inspection visits. The selection criteria were that they either stored a large number of unusable and demolished cars or appeared to have inadequate parking places. It can be noted from the visits that the construction of these areas is not at an acceptable level. Some of the areas had no impenetrable ground and some areas were placed close to a ditch or a well.  Due to how these areas were arranged, there was a risk of ground, water and groundwater contamination from the cars. The garages should set up better routines for how they handle potentially leaking cars and measure the problems of the areas in order to prevent a possible contamination.
