Abstract [en]

Decontamination of mercury in dental clinics

Identification of properties in municipality of Västerås with discontinued or moved dental clinics as well as verification of decontamination of mercury

The responsibility for post-treatment is regulated in the 10th chapter in the Environmental Code [1] (SFS 1998:808). The operator of an activity is primarily responsible for the remediation. If the operator can not stand for the remediation or if the property owner knew or should have discovered the contamination, a property owner or a previous such be held responsible for the remediation, 10th chapter 3 § Environmental Code. 14 abandoned or relocated dental clinics were identified in the municipality of Västerås, upon examination of telephone directories from 1999 to 2010. The owners of these properties were interviewed. The following conclusions where made:

  • Seven properties were decontaminated.
  • One property was not decontaminated.
  • Two properties that the owner does not know if they have been decontaminated.
  • The property owners was not reachable for four properties

Further studies and additional measures are needed to deal with the problem of mercury from discontinued dental clinics in the municipality of Västerås. The administration of environmental and health protection of Västerås may contact the property owners for further investigations. The administration of environmental and health protection can have an information campaign so that future discontinued dental clinics will be decontaminated. Remediation of mercury contaminated pipes should be considered in case there is an opportunity for the municipality to apply for grants for environmental projects [1] Miljöbalken (SFS 1998:808)
