Umeå University, Faculty of Arts, Humlab.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This article is about the production of meaning and identity in relation to self-harm. It focuses on the ways in which online self-harm communities are created and used, as well as on the categorisations and distinctions inherent in the construction of community. The critical framing of psychiatry, strongly normative in this context, is of particular interest here. It is suggested that such a construction of psychiatry should be understood as a means for constructing identity and for strengthening the sense of community on online message boards.
