Effect of forestry on DOC concentration during spring flood (English)
Abstract [en]

Forest harvesting implies subsequently changed conditions in soil and water. The purpose of the study was to investigate how forest clear-cuts affect the concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in streams during the spring flood. The amount of DOC transported to the streams was compared between two untreated control catchments (C1 and C2) and two clear-cut catchments (H1 and H2). The study was performed in the boreal forest region of northern Sweden during the spring flood since this season delivers more than half of the annual DOC export to streams. The four headwater catchments were intensively sampled during spring flood by automatic isco units and thereafter analyzed for DOC. The DOC export for C1, C2, H1 and H2 was 53, 34, 202 and 68  kg/ha during the spring flood, respectively. Both DOC and discharge fluctuated during the spring flood. Two major discharge peaks were observed. The DOC export was 5 % of the total export during the first peak and 91% during the second peak. The DOC exports were similar between the clear-cut catchments and they were higher than the control catchments throughout the study period. Since the ground water table increases after harvesting runoff also increases. Thus more DOC flushes through superficial organic rich horizons which lead to larger amounts of DOC transported to the streams.
