Abstract [en]

Teachers assignment and working tasks - what do teachers do at work?

Abstract:

Tasks a teacher must perform is regulated in various policy documents. The teacher's mission can be divided into the knowledge assignment and the upbringing assignment. To be able to perform this profession it is required that teachers are professional in their role as a teacher. Therefore, in this work, teaching as a profession is compared against the concept of professionalism. The purpose of this work is to examine what some upper secondary teachers spend time on during a week of work and relate it to what is considered to be the teachers profession and what the teachers are required to do according to the policy documents available. To achieve the purpose a qualitative method with time logs and interviews with teachers on a upper secondary school in northern Sweden was chosen.

The study show that teachers undertake a variety of different tasks during a week. The interviewed teachers believe that teaching and before and after related work get too little attention. Administrative tasks and student affairs instead take up a lot of energy and time, time that must be taken from other duties. The literature included in the study and the carried out interviews make it clear that the teaching profession can’t be regarded as a profession according to the definition used in the study. The teachers in the study believe that the profession lacks authority, systematic theory and common professional ethics.

The complexity found in the teaching profession requires reflection in the work. According to several of the interviews there is no time for reflection and several teachers feel that they do not develop in the profession. That is a danger to the profession and can be a reason why more and more teachers quit and look for other jobs.
