Abstract [en]

A comparison has been made of concurrent programming in software industry applications and student assignments at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Umeå.

Through four interviews with software developers and the paper also investigates their experiences and attitudes towards concurrent programming.

The essay shows that it’s hard to specify what concepts should be considered a part of concurrent programming when using a broad definition of the concept. Many different approaches are used when creating concurrent applications.

While having problems mapping specific concept into matrices for evaluation it still shows that practical University assignments contain similar techniques as the ones used in the Software industrypresented by the four interview objects.

The interviews also show that concurrent programming is something that is preferably avoided. None of the interview objects have encountered a policy regarding concurrent programming at their workplaces but the use of framework at larger companies alleviates the majority of programmers from dealing with concurrency programming.
