At the background of an ongoing discussion about merits and professionalism in theeducational system this case study aims to depict the process of implementing Informationtechnology in Swedish schools through a specific example in southern Sweden. This is doneby interviewing key individuals involved in an iPad project, taking place in a period whereschools “are testing the waters” and media debates rage on what role technologies (computers,iPads and other devices) should have in educational settings. This qualitative essay showsboth possibilities and obstacles as seen by the participants at a school trying to keep up withincreasing demands from society as well as the educational system. The process ofimplementing iPad in the daily operation has served an invigorating purpose considering thatthe staff has previously been relatively deprived of technological benefits concerning bothstudents and educators. But the implementation has also been stressful and demanding forindividual teachers. This study shows that iPad has benefitted the teachers in terms offulfilling special needs in the classroom and has further shown that using IT mightcomplement their daily work. As for further implementation after this project is concluded,there are some aspects where caution should be advised which can also be useful to learnfrom: The importance of continuous in-job training, establishing practical solutions on siteand putting aside time to be used for planning and to reduce stress among the staff.
