Waste collection in Kiruna city center - A study of three waste collection systems with focus on environmental and user perspectives

The purpose of this report was to study waste collection systems andfind the best alternative, with focus on environmental and user perspectives,for the new areas in Kiruna. The study was based on interviews with waste managementdepartments in five cities and a survey. Users of optical sorting were mostsatisfied with the system and experienced the least impact from noise andlitter. At the same time, less quality can occur with these systems. Users ofthe vacuum waste collection system were in comparison to the other cities leastsatisfied with the system, experienced the lowest sorting rate and had thehighest percentage who thought they would increase their sorting with anothersystem. The system can improve the living environment but since some materialsare not recommended in the system, it requires other places for sorting in theproperties. Both optical sorting and the vacuum waste collection systemdecrease the transports. According to picking tests sorting in different binsresults in higher quality in sorted fractions and it is an open and pedagogicsystem. However, the transports are higher with this system. Optical sorting isprobably the most user friendly system for single-family houses. In apartmentbuildings the same nearness is achieved with joined recycling accommodationswhich probably also has to be used as a complement to vacuum waste collectionsystems. In environmental perspective, the optical sorting or vacuum wastecollection system are the best alternatives for decreased transports. Higherquality has occurred in picking tests from sorting in different bins, which ismore favourable in relation to recycling.
