Tidal energy – A study of suitable locations

To achieve a sustainable development it is crucial to develop renewable energy sources, this report has studied tidal power as an appropriate clean energy source, and has identified a number of suitable locations for the construction of tidal power plants. While estimating which locations are most suitable for the construction of tidal power plants, a number of factors have been taken into consideration. The energy needs of the country in which the tidal power plant is to be constructed, the countries ratio between renewable and fossil fuel and the current dominating fossil energy source. The estimated yearly production of each possible location has also been taken into account and a study of each locations specific environmental context has been undertaken which has revealed that some possible sites are protected by UNESCO. The study shows that Fujian in China, Severn in the UK and Turnagain Arm in the USA, is the most suitable locations for the construction of a tidal power plant. Besides these three, it would also be of interest to construct tidal power plants in Penzhinsk,  Mezen and Zhejian. Penzhinsk has an estimated yearly production of 190 TWh, which should be put into relation with the estimated production of Mezen, the second most powerful site in consideration of estimated early production, which stands at 45 TWh.
