Previous research has been made regarding ill physical health related to work, also regarding inequality at work. Though whether these two issues would be associated has been less studied.
This longitudinal study aimed to examine the relation between perceived unequal treatment at work regarding age and gender and gastric and musculoskeletal symptoms. A total of 123 individuals participated in the study by answering a questionnaire and one year later 92 of them answered the same questionnaire. The results showed an association between perceived unequal treatment at work regarding age and gender and musculoskeletal and gastric symptoms, both when the symptoms were combined as a total measure and separately. Perceived unequal treatment at work regarding age and gender also predicted gastric and musculoskeletal symptoms combined as a total measure one year later. The study concludes that there is much to gain in making changes regarding inequality at workplaces, not only for the employees but also at an organizational and societal level.
