Abstract [en]

Chemicals in clothes – Awareness of chemical issues in ten clothing stores in Umeå

The purpose of this work is to find out how ten selected clothing stores in Umeå meet obligations according to article 33 of the REACH regulation. An additional purpose is to describe the selected companies' control of the chemical content of the clothes and their efforts to go green and to suggest improvements. The work consists of three parts: a survey of the consumers' ”right to know”, where selected companies received an article 33 request via email regarding a selected product. Interviews with store managers in Umeå and their headquarters were made. In addition, a summary of the environmental information on the companies' websites was made. All nine companies in the survey of the consumers' “right to know” gave a legitimate response. 5 out of 10 companies participated in the interview. 4 out of 5 participants had a routine to meet REACH obligations, but none had received any customer questions. Two companies responded that they rarely made unannounced visits to suppliers, while one company never did. 4 out of 5 had eco-labeled products in their range but none of the store managers knew whether their company was aiming to increase sales of eco-labeled products, except for one which only sold environmentally profiled clothing. The conclusions are that a lot of corporate knowledge is concentrated in the headquarters. In order to reach the companies’ environmental aims, the store staff must have more knowledge to implement them in the store.
