Abstract [en]

Is leakage of smoke from the waste incinerator plant a work environmental problem?

A risk analysis: normal fuel compared with hazardous wastes

The aim of this project was to assess the risk towork in the boiler house during leakage problems in a waste incineration plant.High strains with corrosive gases and high temperatures sometimes will cause leakagesin or near the incineration oven. The gas that leaks out is incompletely combustedand unpurified. One series of samples was taken during three days and threedifferent conditions. The first day samples were taken during normal condition. The second day leakage was provoked by changing the pressure in the incineratorand heated with normal fuel. The third day leakage was provoked in the same waybut this time approximately ten percents dangerous waste of coppers, chrome andarsenic impregnated timber were added. The samples analyzed were: asbestos, metals, VOC, PAH, PCB, formaldehyde and nitrogen dioxide. During theexperiment, neither analyzes reached up to the threshold values that SwedishWork Environment Authority's statute book (AF's 2005:17) established. Theconclusion becomes that on the basis of the analyzed parameters the leakagegases will not be a health risk. On the other hand, dust particles that cancontain these substances will be accumulated in the boiler house and to meaninconvenience at among other thing cleaning.
