Abstract [en]

Antibacterial agents in sport- and outdoor clothes - An investigation of the presence in stores and the level of knowledge in stores in Umeå

The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of antibacterial agents in sport and outdoor clothes and sport articles in Umeå. The purpose was also to illuminate environmental and health effects of the antibacterial agents present in clothes and give advice to sport and outdoor stores. Main questions of the study were for example what is the function of antibacterial agents? How are products with antibacterial agents marked? Do store managers have knowledge of antibacterial agents and how do Swedish producers of sport and outdoor clothing motivate the use of antibacterial agent in their own products? The material for this study is derived from scientific articles, Swedish legislation and information from the Swedish Chemicals Agency. The study was performed by visiting sport and outdoor stores in Umeå, where control of the assortment of antibacterial treated products took place, at the same time as store managers were interviewed. Interviews with store managers focused on whether antibacterial treated products are demanded, and their own opinion and state of knowledge about antibacterial agents. The result showed that there are a lot of products treated with antibacterial agents and that the majority of the store managers know that antibacterial agents exist but a few know exactly which products in their store that are treated. The conclusion is that antibacterial treated products are offered in stores in Umeå, that the knowledge about antibacterial agents could be improved among store managers, that the marking on products is not easy to understand and that there is no demand of antibacterial treated products.
