Sedimentation basins at rock quarries - a comparison between seven rock quarries in the region of Umeå, Sweden, focusing on emissions of particles, oil and nitrogen
The purpose of this study was to compare properties of seven sedimentation basins at rock quarries in the region of Umeå, Sweden. The aim of the study was to examine the sedimentation basins function and form, and to investigate whether a sedimentation basin could be designed to reduce emissions of nitrogen. Seven quarries in the area of Umeå were included and operators from each quarry were interviewed about properties of their sedimentation basins and routines for water sampling. Test results of water sampling from each quarry was collected and analyzed. The most common parameters that were analyzed were oil pollution, nitrogen concentration and turbidity. The results from the interviews and tests showed that oil and turbidity can be discarded as environmental problem at these rock quarries, whereas further studies are necessary to assess nitrogen concentrations. Some of the quarries showed high emissions nitrogen emissions which may lead to eutrophication and oxygen depletion. At one of the studied quarries test results showed successful reduction of nitrogen due to the water passing through wetlands where denitrification helped decrease the content of nitrogen. The conclusion of the report is that more resources should be directed towards water sampling and analyzing it’s nitrogen concentration in both sedimentation basins as well as the water recipient. Constructed wetlands should be considered where high emissions of nitrogen are discovered.
