Abstract [en]

Sorting and recycling of household waste at preschools - an evaluation of five preschools in Holmsund and Obbola, Umeå, focusing on foodwaste sorting

The purpose of this study was to evaluate how sorting of food waste and recycling at pre-schools in Holmsund and Obbola works. Factors that have or have had an impact on pre-school staff’s food waste sorting were studied. Moreover, the working environment of the sanitation workers was also considered. This was examined by conducting interviews with pre-school teachers, kitchen staff and sanitation workers. These interviews showed that staff have successful routines regarding food waste sorting. Problems that could arise when dealing with food waste was when waste contained a high amount of fluids that led to broken and leaking paper bags. Other problems were the smell of waste from the bins during the summer and that the indoor space for waste storage was too small. The results also show that to improve sanitation workers’ working environment bins should not stand too close to each other and pre-school staff need to be informed of this. Factors contributing to the success of food waste disposal were accessibility, flexibility, information and attitude. Conclusions and proposals for actions that have emerged during this study is that information should be given to relevant party’s regarding routines that can prevent problems due to wet food waste. Waste collecting intervals during the summer months should be every week in order to reduce problems with smell and flies. Additionally, if any new or refurbishments to the property are made the property owner should review options for waste storages indoors.
