Abstract [en]

How riding-schools in Västerbottens County experience the changes in animal welfare legislation regarding horses

The purpose of this study was to investigate how riding-schools in Västerbottens County experience the additional paragraphs in the new animal welfare legislation regarding horses, if they had to change their routines because of these additions and if the animal welfare legislation regarding horses take horses natural behavior in consideration. To answer these questions a survey research was made with riding- schools in Västerbottens County. The result of the changes in the new legislation are that horses must be able to move freely and use all their gaits in the paddock, they can not be bound more than sixteen hours a day in a crib and they need social contact with another horse, other social animal or a human. The result shows that all riding-schools in the survey are familiar with the changes in the new legislation. Not one of the riding-schools has been affected by the changes and they did not have to change their routines. Almost everyone in the survey thinks that the changes are positive, however two riding-schools thought that the changes were negative because the legislation is bureaucratic and that there is no room for common sense. The conclusion is that the changes in the new legislation regarding animal welfare for horses are not a problem for the riding-schools in the survey. The study also shows that the riding-schools in the survey in general have a positive experience of the new legislation and that the legislation in general take horses natural behavior in consideration.
