Action proposal for the certification on the Dyckerten- building in Umeå city by the Swedish certification system Miljöbyggnad

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the Dyckerten- building would be able to reach the demands needed in order to be certified with the highest qualification, GOLD by the Swedish certification system Miljöbyggnad. The aim of the study was also to determine which qualification the building would receive if it was rated today and to list action proposals to serve as a decision basis for renovating the building according to the GOLD level of certification. Experts in the area were interviewed and the building was manually inspected. There are many old buildings in need of renovation in Sweden since the Million programme, initiated in the 1960’s by the government. In order to reach the goals to achieve a sustainable community, certification systems for buildings can be a step in the right direction. The certification system is made up by indicators that measure specific values, such as energy consumption per square meter. The results show that more indicators need to be measured in order to be able to fully rate the present condition of the building and in order to determine whether or not the building will be able to reach the GOLD level of certification after the ongoing renovation. Although the study could not provide a detailed conclusion as to what certification level the building would be able to reach at the present time, the results can still be helpful during the planning and reconstruction of the Dyckerten building. A list of indicators can be a helpful tool when trying to improve the value of the building, save energy and work towards a sustainable development.
