Abstract [en]

People have always liked to travel, but today with an increased infrastructure, finance and

spare time we travel more than ever. Skiing holidays has become very popular in Sweden and has been growing gradually for the last couple of years. Attributes like socioeconomic status and lifestyle influence consumer behavior and their way of living, therefore affects choice of travel destinations. Furthermore, people in the same social class tend to associate with each other and spend their spare time in similar ways. The aim with this paper is to learn more about the Swedish ski tourist with focus on their socioeconomic class to find out whether there is one typical social class represented amongst them. The thesis also investigates why people chose a skiing holiday, and what influences their buying decision. It also tries to find out whether there’s a difference between high and low season tourists. The thesis is built on one primary source, a questionnaire. The secondary sources are literature and scientific ar-ticles concerning tourism, socioeconomic class, and consumer behavior. It is also based on the homepages of the ski lift organization SLAO and SCB. Because of the low participation in the questionnaire, no general conclusions could be drawn in this paper. However, indications show that the Swedish ski tourist comes from a high socioeconomic background as the majori-ty is highly educated and over a third can be classified as high income earners. The most dominant travel motive was skiing, followed by nature and fresh air, relaxation and experi-ence. Family opinions, the family situation and previous experience proved to be important for the decision making progress in the purchase of a skiing holiday. No major differences were detected between high and low season tourists.
