Abstract [en]

Air pollution from traffic

- How is the air quality in connection to E4 in Umeå, Örnsköldsvik and

Sundsvall and how can ring roads affect the air quality on the the current

route of E4

The purpose of this study was to present concentrations of air pollutants in connection to E4 in

Umeå, Örnsköldsvik and Sundsvall, and also show how the concentrations relate to the air quality

regulation. The purpose was also to investigate how a ring road, which leads E4 around the cities,

can contribute to improving air quality at the current route of E4. To present concentrations of air

pollutants in the three cities, air data were taken from each municipality together with air data

from the Swedish Environmental Research Institute. The program SIMAIR was used to calculate

the alter in air quality that the ring roads will lead to. Air data from Umeå, Örnsköldsvik and

Sundsvall shows that there are concerns relating to air quality in these cities. For all cities, the

result points out concentrations of air pollutants that exceed or previously have exceeded the air

quality regulation in connection to E4. With a ring road around the cities, the result shows that the

air quality will be improved and that concentrations of nitrogen dioxide och particles (PM10) is not

going to exceed the air quality regulation for any of the cities on the current route of E4.
