Abstract [en]

The situation for abandoned and homeless cats in Sweden - And suggested improvements how the occurrence of homeless and abandoned cats could decrease in the long term.

The purpose of this study is to give an introduction to the problems concerning homeless and abandoned cats in Sweden, and discusses potential measures to improve the situation. The domesticated cat (Felis silvestris catus) has been a human companion, friend, and aide for thousands of years. Presumably more than 100.000 cats are homeless in Sweden. Most of these cats used to be pets but have been abandoned for various reasons. The number of abandoned cats increases every year, developing into a major animal welfare problem. A cat living outdoors without any human supervision is to a greater extent than other cats exposed to starving, freezing, getting hurt, becoming sick and getting attacked by other cats or even humans. For the essay a survey conducted at eight cat shelters was made. The results show that there are difficulties in handling homeless cats. No legislation defines who is responsible for them. Furthermore, homeless cats have a low status within society. In order to improve the situation of homeless cats, following measures can be done: First of all, the image of cats needs to be improved to increase public attention. Furthermore, Sweden could prepare a legislation that is specifically directed towards homeless and abandoned cats. In addition, cat owners need to be informed about the importance of neutering their cats, and appropriate information is needed for prospective cat owners before they get a cat to make them realize that they will be responsible for the cat’s welfare for many years.
