Abstract [sv]

The need of knowledge revolving first-time father experiences, feelings and thoughts is extensive and insight and knowledge about his emotional life in conjunction with being a dad is equally important. The purpose with this study is to investigate how men, that recently became a first-time father, manages and experience the first time with his child. We used a narrative method and interviewed seven fathers as we conducted our qualitative interview study. All the fathers went through life changes. No one talked about sacrifices, but noted rather that their lives were to become different. None of the fathers had a coping strategy. The intervjupersons were more or less reflective about their own childhood and what they were or were not to pass on to their own children. The things they did not want to pass on to their own children were more likely to come from their fathers. The things they wanted to pass on came on the other hand from their mothers. All of the fathers were living more of a family life now. They did not prioritize their old socializing in favor for their family. All of the fathers thought they had a good commitment to their children.
